Ethel Carrick Fox – Colour, Life and Movement
Ethel Carrick (1872 – 1952) was an artist of colour, light and life. She painted in the gardens of Paris, in the bazaars of North Africa and in Australia. Married for ten years to Emanuel Phillips Fox, she painted for many decades beyond his death. Born in Britain, she worked mostly in France and Australia, locations similar to her contemporary Hilda Rix Nicholas. This talk will celebrate Ethel’s work, consider her contemporaries and the social changes of her times. It will draw on the summer retrospective of her work at the National Gallery Australia, Canberra from December 2024 – April 2025.
