Hans Holbein & Albrecht Dürer – Why are they so celebrated?

Born more than 500 years ago, Hans Holbein and Albrecht Dürer remain familiar names. Holbein as the artist responsible for our many images of Henry VIII and his English Court. Albrecht Dürer for his drawings and woodcuts, that spread and influenced an exchange between Northern and Southern Renaissance artists in Europe. We can add Lucas Cranach the Elder and his enticing 1520s paintings of Cupid complaining to Venus of the stings of love. Both artists have been the subject of recent London exhibitions with Dürer’s Journey’s at the National Gallery and Holbein at the Queen’s Gallery
