John Singer Sargent – Paintings of Fashion & Society
WEA – Sydney
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) is celebrated for the striking society portraits he painted in Paris, London and in the USA. His work shows wonderful technical mastery whilst able to engage strongly with the viewer. His Madame X painting in Paris produced such strong public reaction, he fled to London. The 2024 exhibition at Tate Britain focuses on Sargent & Fashion. With paintings and many original garments, it shows Sargent’s ability to create statement through costume. But he painted more than society portraits and had friendships with Monet and other painters as well as writers. We will explore the wonderful paintings and stories behind them.
